Habitat Loss and Fragmentation
نویسنده
چکیده
Glossary Cover type A term used by the geographers for a type of mapped feature (e.g., forest, freshwater, or grassland). The dominant natural cover type in a landscape is often used to approximate habitat. Fragmentation per se The breaking apart of habitat while keeping habitat amount constant. Habitat The place where an organism normally lives. Habitat fragmentation The breaking apart of habitat into several smaller pieces. Habitat fragmentation results in both habitat loss and fragmentation per se. Habitat loss A change to an area that prevents a species from living there (e.g., conversion of forest to crop field).

Effects of Habitat Fragmentation on Biodiversity
■ Abstract The literature on effects of habitat fragmentation on biodiversity is huge. It is also very diverse, with different authors measuring fragmentation in different ways and, as a consequence, drawing different conclusions regarding both the magnitude and direction of its effects. Habitat fragmentation is usually defined as a landscape-scale process involving both habitat loss and the br...
متن کاملWhat Is Habitat Fragmentation?
Habitat fragmentation is an issue of primary concern in conservation biology. However. both the concepts of habitat and fragmentation are ill-defined and often misused. We review the habitat concept and examine differences between habitat fragmentation and habitat heterogeneity, and we suggest that habitat fragmentation is both a state (or outcome) and a process. In addition, we attempt to dist...
متن کاملQuantifying Terrestrial Habitat Loss and Fragmentation: A Protocol
Anthropogenic habitat loss and fragmentation have been implicated as among the key drivers of the burgeoning global biodiversity crisis. In response, there is a growing mandate among natural resource managers to evaluate the impacts of proposed management actions on the extent and fragmentation of habitats. Unfortunately, few guidelines exist to help managers understand the many complex issues ...
متن کاملHabitat Loss, Not Fragmentation, Drives Occurrence Patterns of Canada Lynx at the Southern Range Periphery
Peripheral populations often experience more extreme environmental conditions than those in the centre of a species' range. Such extreme conditions include habitat loss, defined as a reduction in the amount of suitable habitat, as well as habitat fragmentation, which involves the breaking apart of habitat independent of habitat loss. The 'threshold hypothesis' predicts that organisms will be mo...
متن کاملDispersal and Wetland Fragmentation
Wetlands provide habitat for a diverse array of aquatic and semiaquatic species, many of which provide direct economic and recreational value (Woodward and Wui 2001). Despite the provided by wetland fauna and flora, ecosystem services historical wetland loss has been dramatic. Wetland loss was >50% in the U.S. and 60-70% in Europe by the 1980s, with most losses resulting from agriculture and ur...
